CityBeat

So after my last 10 posts pertaining to UK Basketball, I decided its time to get back to normal here on The Ktulu and fortunately there is plenty of reason to update.

I was fortunate enough to land one of eight internships at CityBeat and after 2 full days of work it has been a great experience. The daily routine can be a tad mind numbing at times, doing things like entering the dining guide information onto the web site or fact checking numbers and dates for venues.

As the semester goes on each intern will be given the opportunity to write a full feature and increasingly dedicate more and more time to the "To Do" section.

I love the atmosphere, I love what the magazine stands for, and I love how its done. I am glad to be a part of it.

Green Day sets the bar even higher

I won't lie to you. Following the success of American Idiot, I was positive Green Day wouldn't be able to live up to the hype. I couldn't have been more wrong.
21st Century Breakdown has the most musically mature sound I have heard from a Green Day album to date. Every song no longer calls on 4 chord distorted guitar progressions, yet they are not obsolete. Instead they are buried behind well crafted piano and acoustic parts that add refreshing depth to the album.
As always, lyrically Green Day excells. The album has a rock opera kind of feel very similar to American Idiot, but the topics vary a bit more across this album which is a nice change of pace as well.
American Idiot was so well received because of the time in which it was released, but 21st Century Breakdown promises to have a bit more of a timeless quality due to itstranscendent lyrics.

I read that American Idiot was just a warm up for 21st Century Breakdown, and after listening, I couldn't have said it better myself.

Eminem's back. Seriously.

Whether or not he cranked it up because he knew he was falling off, Eminem has got his formula right again. This album would be the perfect follow up to the Marshall Mathers LP. It turns out the singles were a nice big "Ef You" to the record label, the annoying nasaly accented voice appears almost nowhere else on the album outside of those singles. But the true mastery shows itself in the lyrics.

Back are the offensive, brilliantly crafted lyrics that depict in detail the most macabre stories possible and it couldnt have come sooner. Rap needed this face lift, and i PROMISE Em deserves his place back on the throne.

And the final 5 songs are a prelude to Relapse 2. God save us when that comes, because those songs are as good as any Em has released in his career.

John Wall becomes the line between "Great" and "Historic"

With tomorrow's commitment of the #3 Point Guard, and 5 star recruit Eric Bledsoe to UK, that makes three 5 star players in this recruiting class. Wall would make 4. The class would consist of 6 players in the top 50, 4 in the top 30 and 2 in the top 10. Well, 2 in the top 2... It would be the greatest recruiting class in the history of college basketball ranking wise. Yes, better than the fab five. But Bledsoe means more than that. He is assurance that UK will have a good point guard next season. Wall, however, could be the difference in a Preseason #1 team. Not bad for a month of work by John Calipari.

UK's Recruiting class

Over all Ranking listed first,Name, Position

#2 Demarcus Cousins PF
#22 Daniel Orton C
#23 Eric Bledsoe PG
#40 Jon Hood G

(4 star) Junior College Transfer Darnell Dodson F

Potential:
#1 John Wall PG

Star Trek dubbed 'fun, watchable'

Quite the perfect take on many Star Trek fan's feelings towards the franchise. Made me chuckle a bit...

Dear Em, Please Stop using that voice...

Eminem has released his second single from relapse, "3am." Lyrically the content is much better than "We Made You" although admittedly its pretty messed up as it looks into the mind of a psychotic killer. The music video is even more messed up. But all I can think about as I listen to it is how much better it COULD have been if Eminem had just used his regular voice, rather than the parody voice he's used on his past handful of singles. The dark song sounds more like a joke as his pisses his nasaly voice all over it.

Take a look at the video (in all seriousness it is not an MTV video. It contains a fair amount of disturbing shit. Just a heads up).

I like everything about the video/song EXCEPT his voice. I hope these first two singles are flukes and he uses his real voice on the rest of the album. Time will tell.

Hard Knocks with the Who Deys?

As of now, the Bengals are the top contender for this season's Hard Knocks on HBO. Last season followed the Dallas Cowboys, and it was an outstanding series. The show allows viewers to go in depth, and get to know players and personal on the team as the team progresses through its summer training camps. The season typically consists of 6 hour-long episodes that run from the early camps, through the preseason games. The show stays up to date, airing just one week after the actual events in many cases, but this in no way leads to poor production, as this is a very well put-together show. I think it'd be great for the franchise if the players can stay out of trouble and earn the respect of a national audience. What would be even better would be if they could back it up on the field after the series concluded. I'll be keeping a close eye on this, and keeping my fingers crossed that it doesn't fall through.

Suit Up...

....as Lil Wayne prepares to ruin another genre of music. Yes, I respect his "rap" but I don't like it. Mispronouncing words to make lines rhyme doesn't count. I also wish he didn't sound like he just woke up every time he rapped. Anyway, that isn't the point. The bottom line is that a few months ago Weezy claimed he was going to release a rock album and I thought he was joking. He wasn't. It's coming out June 3rd. And if all the songs are as bad as the single, Top 40 will play them anyway, and I am going to need to buy some earplugs. Here it is.

Not for the faint of heart.
